Now You Can Own The Schitt’s Creek Rosebud Motel!

House Crazy Sarah heard her Canadian friends and family raving for years about this kooky little show filmed in her home province of Ontario called “Schitt’s Creek“. But she never actually paid much attention or watched a single show herself until it made headlines around the world recently by sweeping the Emmys with a record seven wins, making it the most awarded comedy in a single year.

A small quirky Canadian town full of crazy characters and charming scenery??

What the hell has House Crazy Sarah been missing?  Schitt’s Creek seems so up her alley! She has a whole lot of catching up to do!

In the meantime, word has gotten out recently that the show’s centerpiece motel – The Rosebud – is up for sale!

Located in Orangeville, Ontario (about an hour west of Toronto), the real life filming location is where the Rose Family (played by Canadian actors Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy) landed after losing their fortune.

The show had a good run from 2015-2020 and during that time, many fans have come from around the world to track down the real motel that served as the Rose family’s make-shift home in the fictional town of Schitt’s Creek.

No, Schitt’s Creek is not actually a real place in Ontario. The scenes from the show were shot in several small towns in southern Ontario including Orangeville, Unionville, and Whitchurch-Stouffville.

The Rosebud Motel building is located at 308385 Hockley Road, Orangeville.

Jesse Tipping, the building’s owner, purchased the property in 2011 to house teens from all over the world who attend his Athlete Institute Basketball Academy in the Hockley Valley.

The motel was cheap accommodation for youngsters needing affordable dorms while they stayed and studied – not hockey – but basketball.

The Athlete Institute Basketball Academy and Orangeville Prep is one of the Canada’s most successful basketball prep schools. Tipping bought the motel, which has eight apartment-style rooms and a three-bedroom home inside as a place to house his recruits. Denver Nuggets player Jamal Murray actually lived in the motel for two years while attending the school!

Things were going along as planned when out of the blue, a location scout called Tipping and inquired about using the property as a filming spot for a new CBC sit-com.

The Schitt’s Creek’s production team rented out the motel for one month a year for six years. The show’s sixth and final season finished airing in April 2020.

Tipping no longer uses the property for his students – the academy outgrew the motel and he built an actual dormitory for them on the nearby campus, but he held onto the motel as long as the show continued to film.

When the production crew was not filming the show, the motel was quietly rented out as a cheap Airbnb rental for people who needed a spot when they were coming to ski at Hockley or working in the area for weddings or events.

In addition to Schitt’s Creek, the motel has also been a set for other productions, including the film A History of Violence, and the TV shows Umbrella Academy and 11.22.63.

Now that the Roses have said farewell to Schitt’s Creek and the Rosebud Motel, it’s time for Tipping to do the same.

Tipping had reportedly planned to sell the motel earlier in 2020, but his plans changed due to the coronavirus pandemic. In recent months, he opened the motel up to a local organization that needed space for people to quarantine amid the pandemic.

Tipping doesn’t want to sell the motel to just anyone, however, he has a specific vision for it. He wants to see it become “a five-star experience” – a boutique hotel with a fancy restaurant.

House Crazy Sarah respectfully disagrees. She thinks the hotel should be meticulously recreated as the low-budget derelict Rosebud Motel – complete with dingy interior and second-hand 70’s style furnishings so guests could get the true Schitt’s Creek experience.

Wouldn’t it be the bomb if you could rent out the room where the Rose family went slumming?

And you could hang out in the dreary, drab motel lobby…

House Crazy Sarah thinks her idea is the perfect angle to pay homage to the beloved show.

The seven-acre property has not been listed publicly on the market because the owner, who also lives in the area, is hoping to negotiate a private sale. He has also not disclosed a price to the media but you can bet this now iconic piece of Canadian filming history will fetch him a pretty penny.
