Colorado’s Famous Spaceship House

House Crazy Sarah loves all things funky, especially when it comes to homes. She loves Colorado and she loves mid-century modern design. So it’s a no-brainer that she has always had a *thing* for the famous “Spaceship House” in the mountains just west of Denver.

Also known as The Sculptured House, The Sleeper House, or just that funky weird house in Colorado.

Driving by on Interstate 70, the view you get of the house is this:

The alien-esque house looks rather small from down below but it is actually a whopping 7,700-square-feet, with five bedrooms, five bathrooms, and is five stories tall!

Architect Charles Deaton designed the home, and builders Delzell Inc. began constructing it back in 1963. However, the company’s owners ran out of money midway through and the home sat unfinished for several decades

Luckily, in 1999 a prominent Denver entrepreneur bought the shell and completed building it with the help of Deaton’s daughter. It has sold several times since then, most recently in 2010.

Here’s the view from the backside:

It’s still a private residence but is occasionally open for photo ops.

Despite barely being an antique, the Deaton Spaceship house is listed on Jefferson County’s National Register of Historic Places.

From the interior, the amazing mountain views compete for attention with the mid-century vintage furnishings.

It’s like the Rocky Mountain version of The Jetsons!

You may have seen this house on television or the big screen because it has been featured in several shows and movies including Sleeper (1973) and Charlie’s Angels (2000).

This oddity perched in the Colorado mountains is truly one of a kind.

Architect Charles Deaton said of his creation: “I wanted the shape of it to sing an unencumbered song.”

House Crazy Sarah thinks the house looks like a giant smiling clam!
