Shel Silverstein’s Former Houseboat Is For Sale!

Shel Silverstein's Sausalito boathouse

One of House Crazy Sarah’s favorite authors when she was growing up was Shel Silverstein.

She loved the way he combined his silly stories and poems with his signature twiggy drawings in books like Where The Sidewalk Ends, A Light In The Attic, and, The Giving Tree. She was always enthralled by his slightly off sense of humor and his odd-ball style. She might even go as far as to say he was one of her early influences and probably part of the reason why she turned out so goofy.

When House Crazy Sarah saw an article that Shel’s former boathouse in Sausalito, California was for sale, she was so excited to see inside!

Even though Shel has not lived in the houseboat since 1981 (and in fact, he passed away back in 1999), there are still some vestiges of him in here.

It has been revamped over the years, but Shel’s sense of fun and whimsy is still present throughout the floating dwelling.

Priced at $780,000, the 1,200-square-foot boathouse at 8 Liberty Dock was originally built in 1965 atop a World War II balloon barge. Silverstein called it “The Evil Eye.” He lived on this vessel from 1967 to 1981.

It still possesses the quirky vintage charm of yesteryear with stained-glassed windows, unfinished wood paneling, and worn hardwood floors.

The upper floor is situated under an atrium of glass and is just magical.

The latest owners added a sleek, modern kitchen.

There’s not a whole lot of color in the house, but then again, neither was there in Shel’s cartoons. His work was so powerful, the black and white line drawings were enough to make a statement without color.

House Crazy Sarah can feel this homage to Silverstein in the decor.

There are two funky bedrooms in the lower level:

The master bedroom is dreamy, but check out the kids’ room:

$780,000 may seem like a lot to pay for a revamped old military barge, but just think of the creative energy that flowed through this place when it was inhabited by none other than Shel Silverstein!
