Word on the Water is a floating bookstore built on a vintage 1920’s Dutch barge. You can find it moored in various places in London, most recently in Regents Canal in King’s Cross.

This novel idea was brought to fruition in 2011 by book loving creatives Paddy Screech and Jon Privett.

Even if you don’t read, even if you hate books, wouldn’t this place stop you in your tracks and make you do a double take?

The bookstore prominently features cult literature, or “griterature” as the owners call it.

With all those tomes in close proximity to water, House Crazy Sarah wonders if – gasp – any books have ever fallen overboard and now rest in the murky depths of London’s canals?

Shuddering at the thought!

House Crazy Sarah would love to stroll in and not only peruse the books, but also admire the vintage nautical architecture.

Since she’s never been to London (yet), let us just enjoy the photos she swiped from Word on the Water’s Facebook page.

Isn’t it quaint?

And oh so cozy (cosy?)…

Look at the antique till! Do they use it? Probably!

A floating book store in chilly London needs a little wood stove to keep things warm and toasty.

There’s just something so appealing about this place… it’s old, it’s on water, it’s quaint, it’s in London, and look at all the cool books!

Word on The Water not only has a great collection of books, they also host Poetry Slams, readings, and live acoustic music on the roof stage…

If you are ever in London, look up this unique place on Facebook to see where they are moored so you can go visit!
