Maplecroft: The House Where Lizzie Borden Lived And Died

This is the home of the infamous Lizzie Borden in Fall River, Massachusetts.

Not to be confused with the house where Lizzie Borden was accused of brutally killing her father and step-mother by axing them to death (House Crazy Sarah will feature that house in a future post). No, this is where Lizzie lived out her days after she was acquitted of the murders.

This incredible Queen Anne Victorian is currently on the market for $890,000.

Let’s have a look inside, shall we?

After being set free, Lizzie Borden chose to remain a resident of Fall River for the rest of her life, despite facing ostracism from the other residents. She grew old there and died in this very house of pneumonia at the age of 66.

How did poor orphaned Lizzie afford such an opulent house?

After her acquittal, Lizzie and her sister inherited her father’s estate which was estimated to be around 8 million dollars in today’s money.

Lizzie employed a full staff of live-in maids, a housekeeper and a coachman.

Maplecroft is being offered fully furnished with the exception of a few pieces of Lizzie memorabilia. But House Crazy Sarah thinks it should all go with the house!

Some of the notable features of this 4,000 square foot home are: 6 fireplaces, 7 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, tin ceilings in the kitchen, coffered ceilings, walnut wainscoting, inlaid parquet floors, and stained glass windows.

Have a look at the re-created Victorian era kitchen:

This small pantry room is just the first part of the kitchen.

Beyond the pantry room, is a larger more modern kitchen that still keeps the charm of yesteryear front and center:

Look at the sink:

Gorgeous!

Let’s have a peek in some of the well-appointed bedrooms…

Remember there are SEVEN of them in total!

Here’s one of the remodeled bathrooms…

Notice the antique reproduction high-tank toilet!

And more bedrooms…

The upper attic rooms would have been the live-in servants’ quarters.

Wouldn’t this make a fabulous bed & breakfast?

Out on the large wraparound porch:

This could be a combination museum & vacation rental destination for Lizzie Borden enthusiasts.

There are a lot of Lizzie Borden fans out there!
