Today let’s travel to the tiny mountain town of Pitkin, Colorado – population 72.
Pitkin is an old mining town located west of the Continental Divide in the mountains of Gunnison County, Colorado.
And here you will find this adorable historic former railroad depot that is being used as a vacation home.

The Pitkin Railroad Depot was built in 1882 and is listed for sale for $500,000.
That’s a lot of cash for a 900 square foot 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom dwelling, but keep in mind, it is located in prime Colorado mountain real estate.

A bit of history: the Pitkin Depot was built in response to the Colorado Gold Rush of the 1870’s. Narrow-gauge railroads were created to connect the mountain mining towns and Pitkin was one such stop on the South Park Narrow Gauge Line.
But the gold rush didn’t last forever and by the 1940’s, the rail line was abandoned, the rails were pulled up and the Pitkin Depot sat empty and unused for decades.
In the 1970’s, the current owners bought the property and converted the old depot into a mountain vacation getaway.

The interior is dated since it was last remodeled in the 1970’s. It now stands as a curious mix of gaudy 1970’s style and rustic 1880’s decor. Still, modern conveniences such as power, lights, and plumbing were added, making it a functional little time capsule.

When you see the view of the bright sunlit mountains through those multi-pane windows – the exact same view that hardy travelers a century and a half ago would have enjoyed – you can understand the appeal.

Time has stood still here.

The kitchen is small, as are the two bedrooms.

Throughout the former depot, you will find nods to its mountain railroad history.

The town of Pitkin is seeing somewhat of a renaissance: the local historic hotel is undergoing a complete renovation, and the Stumbling Moose Bar & Grill made news by obtaining the first liquor license in Pitkin in several decades.

Surrounded by the Gunnison National Forest, Pitkin is a recreation hotspot for outdoor enthusiasts and Crested Butte ski resort is a little over an hour away.

Still, is this little former depot worth half a million dollars?
Time will tell!
