House Crazy Sarah is obsessed with writer’s houses. And they don’t have to be big fancy ones either. In fact, her favorite kind are the tiny cottages where writers hole up in smoky stupors creating works of genius, like this cozy studio once owned by the famed American author John Steinbeck (The Grapes of Wrath).

Fun fact: an early draft of Steinbeck’s now classic novel, Of Mice and Men, was completely eaten by his dog Max.

Anyhow… back to the writing cottage where all the creative magic took place. It is now used as an Airbnb rental so we can see inside!

Located in Pacific Grove, California, this 350 square foot charmer was built in the 1920’s and owned by Steinbeck for a period in the 1940’s. During his time living here, he wrote The Sea of Cortez and worked on various other novels.

Let’s have a peek inside…

This cozy retreat, in true studio fashion, has one bedroom with a sitting area, a bathroom, and a vintage-inspired kitchen.

The space is tight and not at all built for larger humans. In fact, the Airbnb listing warns: “Taller guests will need to mind their heads.”

Look at the darling bedroom!

It of course has a vintage writing desk used as a bedside table.

And the light-filled sitting area:

But that unique bed makes House Crazy Sarah’s heart palpitate!

John Steinbeck slept here! (Well, not actually in that bed, but in the room!)

The bathroom is a masterpiece in its own right…(the sloped ceilings, the sunken tub!)

House Crazy Sarah is in love (again).

You can rent John Steinbeck’s former home but it doesn’t come cheap at $210 per night. Still, that’s a small price to pay to stay in the former studio cottage of a literary giant.
