House Crazy Sarah was broken-hearted to hear about the recent terrible mass shooting in her homeland of Canada in the quaint eastern province of Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia is normally a peaceful, bucolic land so House Crazy Sarah wanted to pay tribute to the area by featuring a lovely old Nova Scotia home.
The Blue House, Red Barn is located outside of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and has been lovingly restored in recent years by the couple who owns it.
This century-old home is located on one and a half waterfront acres with a barn and a couple of small outbuildings.
When the couple, Shaune and Greg, first acquired the house it was a lighter, worn shade of blue:
The new blue as seen from the barn:
Wow! That vibrant blue really makes the old gal pop!
The 1,400 square foot farmhouse and barn have been a labor of love for the couple. When they first purchased the home in 2016, the interior was in a state of disrepair.
But there were a lot of hidden surprises like this gorgeous antique wallpaper the pair uncovered:
The renovations took a couple of years but look at some of the before and afters:
Love those painted wood floors!
(Hot tip for old house owners: if your old wood floors have been refinished too many times and are too far gone for another round, paint then instead! it will preserve them for several more decades.)
The finished product is light and bright – furnished with local finds and vintage pieces.

Let’s have a look at the gorgeous grounds…
The one and a half acre property slopes down to a gentle salt water inlet.
Along with the blue house, the owners gave the outbuildings and old barn a fresh coat of red paint.
Kudos to the owners for saving this sweet old Nova Scotia homestead. They chronicled their restoration journey on their blog: Blue House Red Barn Blog. House Crazy Sarah highly recommends giving it a read – it is wonderfully written.
Also, the Blue House Red Barn is now used as a VRBO rental so you can stay here on vacation!
